What is it: The Blue Pool is a large natural pool where you can swim, situated about 50 minutes south west of Wollongong.

Why you should go: We parked in a small car park and walked a few metres through the bush. As we got closer to The Blue Pool we caught enticing shimmers of sun on water through the trees.

Hanging on to thick tree trunks to steady ourselves we stepped across the small roots and shallow creek which runs between a small upper pool and the main pool.

Looking to our left we saw the flat water of the pool calmly waiting for us but first we explored the very small upper pool to the right and the shallows where the creek was running over bedrock.

I was enchanted to find big tadpoles, some already developing legs. I was able to scoop up one or two for a closer look. There were also black water beetles skating around each other sociably on the surface.

We turned then to the main body of water and waded in from a large slab of rock which extended out in to the pool. It was wonderful to plunge in to the cool water. Off the edge of the rock it was immediately so deep I couldn't touch the bottom and it remained this deep all the way across to the other side where we clambered out on to the large boulders at the edge.

From there we followed a narrow but well trampled path for about 4 minutes which ran from the pool through the grasses and bushes along the left of the creek.

We were delighted to find that this creek ran all the way to the top of the water fall at Nellies Glen, which we had been swimming in previously.

Back at the pool we swam and floated with the blue sky above us and challenged each other to shallow dives in. A group of teenagers chatted, laughed and splashed about sitting on the rocks at the far side of the pool and a family with young children played among the shallows where the creek ran between the small and large pools.

Who should go: With an easy 1 minute walk in and both deep water and shallows to play in this pool is suitable for everyone.

When to go: I went in January on a hot day and the water was wonderfully refreshing but warm enough to stay in as long as we liked.

Where is it: Take the M1 south from Wollongong. At the big roundabout as you enter Albion Park turn right on to the A48. Follow the road up and up winding around hair pins on the Macquarie Pass. At the top keep going until you approach the Famous Robertson Pie Shop. Don't go past it. Turn off to your left just before it on to Jamberoo Mountain Road. Take a right when you see the sign for Carrington Falls and follow the track through the forest. Take a right turn when you see the sign for The Blue Pool on your right.

What to bring: Food, drinks, sunscreen, swimmers and towel, hats, insect repellent is a must!

Facilities: Picnic bench and drop toilets. Campsite.
