With 'the man' Joe Camilleri at the helm, the tour is all class and style, disguised in laid back familiarity. The line-up is familiar too with Mark Gray – bass, Claude Carranza – guitar, Angus Burchall – drums, John McAll – keyboards backing Camilleri on vocals to sing some of the Sorrows classics, but also showcasing from the new blues album Certified Blue. Defining the sound as blues though is not doing it justice. It is sweet and raw with significant soul, rock, country, blues and gospel sounds sensually woven through the music.
The reviews for Certified Blue, released in April 2014, have been fabulous, then again, Camilleri has been making terrific music for 50 years so rave reviews are to be expected. Although all the songs on the album are new, written by Camilleri and pal Nick Smith, there are faint recollections from the previous fifteen Black Sorrows albums condensed to create this pinnacled masterpiece.
However you don't have to dig into the past because it is all here. If you want to discover – or rediscover- the legend that is Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows then the Certified Blue Tour, Certified Blue album (or both) is the band wagon to be laid back on.
