I have had the absolute pleasure of seeing
Grant Buse perform his unique brand of music and comedy on two occasions already (
The Shuffle Show, The (Not So) Late Night Sexy Show) and I can say in all honesty his new show,
The Birds and The Beats, lives up to his earlier catalogue. Playing at
Wonderland Spiegeltent, grab a drink, pull up a chair and get ready to kick off your night with lots of whooping, cheering and guffawing galore all to a concert of great beats and clever lyrics.
Buse has decided it is time for us all to have a sex-ed refresher and he has taken it upon himself to do so. Buse is a teacher in a special education school and this year, he has had the pleasure of teaching young people with autism about issues of consent and personal space. As he had been doing so, Buse realised these are lessons he never learned in sex-ed at Catholic School.
One of the early questions in the show is exactly that - what do we wish we had learnt in sex-ed class. After polling the room, Buse sets out to fill in our gaps and bring a lot of added value through his music, his comedy, and his determination for open and honest dialogue.
Buse's music is vibrant and lively and he is a master of many genres. Lyrically he slips in hilarious oblique references for the nerds in the room. You can tell who the nerds are because we are the ones who laugh at odd references such as 42.
Amidst all of the less than oblique innuendo and laughter, Buse says some scary things though. One of the most frightening was when he admitted his Catholic education failed to teach him about consent but they did have a seminar on what to do if the police come a'knocking!
In the end, what Buse is really about is joy, expression, and consent. If you believe in these things, nothing is wrong and nobody gets hurt. If everyone would think this way, most of the conflict in the world would be over and we certainly wouldn't be having a non-binding postal plebiscite in Australia.
Enough of the serious stuff though. The Birds and The Beats is funny, with great music, in a great venue and is a great way to get your Fringe evenings on the right track.
