Welcome to this month's edition of the Secret List, a selection of great things to do in Perth with your kids each month. May is a fantastic month: school is back, the weather is cooling down, and Mums' biggest day of the year (Mother's Day) gives us a chance to reap the rewards for all the awesome stuff we have done for the kids all year. Right?

The Month of Festivals
May must be the biggest month of the year for festivals in Perth. Located in a variety of locations across the state, some are good for local drop-ins, others are more of a day-trip. All have a wealth of displays and activities, including family-friendly options for the little people in your life.

Bickley Harvey Festival is on Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd May - in Bickely, surprisingly enough. Local arts and crafts, plus food and wine tasting in a beautiful setting.

Honey Festival : Sunday 3rd May, based in Herne Hill. There will be a range of child friendly activities, including a dance competition, face painting, craft, and a best-bee outfit competition for kids, as well as a visit from the Scitech crew.

May Day Festival : Sunday 3rd May. After a rally and march through Fremantle, bring the kids down to the Esplanade from 1pm for a free family celebration, with sausage sizzle, icecream, show rides, petting zoo, face painting, and plenty of free music and entertainment. Celebrate the working people!

Free Mother's Day Activities in Northbridge
If you think your kids might need a bit of a push to remember Mother's Day, then take them along to the free family day at the Northbridge Piazza. With two free, family-friendly movies (The Secret Garden at noon, and Alice in Wonderland at 4pm), and a bunch of free activities in between, you can all have a great day.

Kids can make free gifts for their mums, including terrariums made out of recycled jars, and pictures made with wildflower seeds. Learn how to make your own hula hoop at home, and how to make pot plants out of recycled newspaper.

When: Sunday 3rd May, 12pm-4pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza
Cost: free

May the Fourth Be With You.

One for the old-school Star Wars lovers. Celebrate May 4th as International Star Wars Day. Watch the movies, build the Lego, speak like Darth Vader, do some role play, but whatever you do make sure it involves Chewie, Han, Luke, and all the gang.

When: Monday 4th May

It's the Big One
Get ready ladies, it's time for macaroni and glitter crafts, jars of coloured sand and lots of toast crumbs in the bed: it's Mother's Day. If you have something specific in mind, it's probably wise to start dropping hints now, leave a website open, or put some sticky notes saying 'THIS ONE' on a jewellery catalogue. Here are some craft ideas , if you need the kids to make gifts for Grandma (or yourself). Lap up the attention and remember to act surprised.

When: Sunday 10th May

Play a While, Play Forever (or for two hours anyway)
Festivals aren't always about loud music, shirtless blokes, and bad dancing. Sometimes they should be about petting zoos, magicians, loud music, shirtless toddlers, and bad dancing. Join Playgroup WA for the Early Years Play Day in Melville, with a huge line up of kid-friendly activities, including nature play, messy play, an interactive music garden, and more. Register at [email protected]

When: Wednesday 13th May, 10am-12noon
Where: Kadidjiny Park (next to Dr Suess Playground) Corner Curtis and Kitchener Roads, Melville
Cost: Free

Celebrate your Family for a whole week
Family is central to everything we do, although we don't tend to recognise this. Every year the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Families. The theme in 2015 is: 'stronger families, stronger communities'. In Australia, we also have Families Week, which is dedicated to achieving a balance between different aspects of our lives, so that everyone has a happy and healthy life. Good luck with that. Celebrate your family. Do it every day.

When: Friday 15th May

Harvest HooHaa

Children will receive copies of all the recipes they learn, and the classes are hands-on. These classes are always popular, so book early or risk missing out.
