Built by Adelaide artist Andrew Stock and the local community,
The Big Ram recognises the value of Karoonda's sheep industry both past and present.
An unprecedented demand for merino wool was created back in the 1950s when the Korean War broke out. The value of wool leaped dramatically all of a sudden. Ewes were fetching £35 a head and, very soon, sheep was replacing wheat and barley as the main source of income. Dubbed 'father of prosperity', the merino ram became popular with woolgrowers in the district.
The two-metre-tall ram has been standing on the railway lawns along the town's main street since 1997 and is still loved by everyone who passes by. In 2001, tiles were added to the structure around its base by Karoonda Area School and East Murray Area School students.
Karoonda is just 150 kilometres east of Adelaide. I reckon a selfie is a must when visiting
The Big Ram .
