Local bands Swaying Buildings, The Stress of Leisure, The Bell Divers, and The Better Mousetrap Treatment will play under the banner of 'The Big 4' in a show at The Zoo on Saturday 1 October.

And, from what I've heard of their music, it's definitely worth heading to the Valley and sampling some sounds from these Brisbane independents.

I'll be honest -- although I've been to lots of Stress of Leisure shows (and love their CDs), I don't know the other bands well. But a quick whirl through the Googlesphere suggests that they all include plenty of guitars and lean towards the tight, jangly end of the pop spectrum (though with some harder edges and heavier bits thrown in).

The bands themselves say their uniting factor is 'their common affection for a damn fine melody and a DIY attitude' -- hence the joint show that they are putting together at The Zoo. The gig will also serve as a launch for The Better Mousetrap Treatment's first single, Sidewalk Glass. If you're in the mood for some sunny pop with a Brisbane flavour, take a look at the clip for the song below.

Reviews for the bands have described them variously as 'a crafty blend of folk pop' (Swaying Buildings reviewed on Brisbane Sounds ), 'an energised blast of fuzzy guitar and meaty rhythm' (The Stress of Leisure on AU Review ), 'chiming, cleanly strummed guitar pop with keyboards' (The Bell Divers on Is By Bus blog ), and 'finely honed laidback pop goodness' (The Better Mousetrap Treatment in Rave Magazine ).

To find out whether you agree with these assessments, take a listen to the tracks below, or head to Myspace and hear a bigger sample from whichever bands take your fancy ( Swaying Buildings , Stress of Leisure , Bell Divers , Better Mousetrap Treatment ).

Independent music in Brisbane is flourishing at the band end of the equation
, but I've been to too many local shows recently where audiences have been disappointingly small.

Tickets for 'The Big 4' are only $10, and it's a chance to see some really interesting Brisbane bands do their stuff. Hope to see you there.
