Is this the biggest musical instrument in the world?
People from all over the world visit Perth's Bell Tower but many local residents still haven't been there, so here's a chance to remedy that. On 2 June to celebrate WA Day, The Bell Tower will host an Open Day with free entry from 10 am to 4 pm.

From somewhat controversial beginnings The Bell Tower, Home of the Swan Bells, has grown into a respected museum and a worldwide centre of an unusual pastime campanology or bell-ringing. The 12 bells of London's St Martin-in-the-Field were presented to the people of Western Australia in 1988. These bells, which were last recast in the 1700s, have been augmented by several modern bells, making the Bell Tower one of the largest "rings" or sets of bells in the world. The Swan Bells are rung every day by volunteer ringers in a practice known as change ringing, following a series of mathematical patterns.

Even visitors can have a go at chiming some of the smaller bells when the very popular bell-handling demonstrations are offered. The Bell Tower is also thought to be the only place in the world where there is a viewing gallery to watch both the bells and the ringers at work.

The Bell Tower Open Day is a great opportunity to experience one of Perth's premier attractions. Watch the bell-ringing, see the historic bells and exhibitions, including the winners of the 2014 Photographic Competition, and enjoy the spectacular view from the Tower's observation deck.
