Please bear with me while I tell you some backstory. A while ago we had the opportunity to discover a hidden cave in Haymarket where a craft beer bar called The Bear had been set up. We had thought we were lost, having lost our bearings, but we eventually found it, barely getting in by closing time.

Thinking it to be another theme bar, this time about bears, we hadn't expected much. However, the mass of dad jokes and bear puns on the walls and menu had us worried that we couldn't bear it. However, we took the whole idea with our bare hands and ran with it, and enjoyed the time there.
[BREAK]
It was an amazing experience and we especially enjoyed the Bjorn Balls, which were beary nice. Unfortunately, closed a few weeks later, and it was unbearable that something so bearish could now be bare. We couldn't bear to think that was gone for good. Impawsible. We decided to grin and bear it until something similar turned up.

We were absolutely delighted to find online recently that it had just gone into hibernation and emerged, refreshed, rejuvenated and alive on Hay Street, next to the Palace Hotel (see my Palace Hotel review here ). We rushed as fast as our paws could take us there to bear witness to this new bar, and found that it had been booked out for a private function of 100 hundred people in bear onesies; slightly embearassing. We would have loved to join but the cupboard was bare of costumes so we decided to come back the following week.

The following Thursday was open and we joyfully descended into the puntastic and bearish underground cave, with nice lighting, friendly people and a wonderful menu. Andy is the creative genius behind , and the new and improved retreat had the most amazing atmosphere. We especially enjoyed the projected fireplace, the bears eating business cards, the libeary, and the UK 500ml mocha stout which will be my bear oops, sorry, beer of choice next time I'm there.

We ordered the Bjorn Balls again and they tasted as good as we remembered. The craft beer was amazing too. They even sold the UK's Bateman's Mocha Beer which is very hard to find in Australia. Delicious.

We also tried their alcoholic cupcakes which were great. At the time it was a special Thursday offer of cupcakes for $1 each. If you're nearby ask for them by name. The one I tasted had chocolate icing. I might ask if they have straw-bear-y flavour next time.

One of our friends joined us later and chose a mix of snacks which included some crackling. Perfect for our drinking night.

This is ideal for relaxing with friends and talking, with pleasant bear-themed walls where you can bare it all to your friends over some tasty alcohol and food. The music is subdued and not at all deafening or overwhelming, the style is relaxed and fun, and the menu offerings make this an interesting night out.

If you have a chance, paws for a second and chat to Andy about the place. He's probably one of the most friendly owners I've met in the past 20 years of clubbing and bar hopping in Sydney, and I highly recommend you say hi if you haven't already.

It's a family atmosphere at . Check it out. And if you find me typing away in the libeary, feel free to say hi!
