Event:
Book launch commemorating the Battle for Crete 80 years ago
The 20th of May is a significant date in that it commemorates the start of the Battle for Crete 80 years ago. This was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War when over 12 days in May 1941 a mixed force of New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops desperately tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault.

No better date to launch Silk Clouds and Olive Trees, Stories from the Battle of Crete, written by historian Deborah Wheeler.

"This little-reported battle had far-reaching consequences for all involved. Reading this book we become aware of how a handful of these ANZACs felt, what they saw and experienced in Greece, Crete and in numerous POW camps where some of them were interred. The forging of unbreakable bonds, particularly with the Cretan people who fought alongside them, often at great sacrifice to themselves, their families and friends. How 80 years later those bonds of friendship have been handed down from family to family."

Memorial in Crete for Greek and Australian soldiers

A portion of the proceeds from book sales will go to 42 for 42, a not-for-profit organisation founded by ex-Army veterans whose aim is to help struggling veterans and their families by building a memorial dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The 42 stands for the 41 veterans who were killed in Afghanistan, with the 42nd representing the veterans who lost (and continue) lose to suicide.

For more information about the organisation and its magnificent memorial garden, go here.

Sounds like an important historical piece. Also pleasing to see support from the Paddo Tavern for this event. Lets hope they keep supporting literature
