The Bald Archy Prize is a spoof on the well-known and illustrious Archibald Awards for portraiture. The awards were founded by theatre and arts personality Peter Batey OAM and have been running since 1994.

Some of the entries are hilarious and some a bit vulgar. But never a country to take ourselves too seriously, it is a good foil for all the art world seriousness that rubs a lot of people up the wrong way.

And let's face it some of Australia's best know personalities have faces or characteristics that are worthy of humour such as Kerry Packer, Amanda Vanstone, Shane Warne, Dame Edna Everage, John Howard, Gai Waterhouse, Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Kennett, and funniest of all, Tony Abbott.

Some of the more controversial paintings have included Pauline Hanson in the nuddie, a wedgy-picking Crown Prince Fredrick of Denmark and Nicole Kidman in a wicked witch's cape. Then there was the 2010 portrait of Bert Newton in the nude. Not a pretty site - his dazzling smile and with one finger attempting to cover a nipple. The portrait, cheekily called Patti's Cake, was by artist Judy Nadin.

It is the only art competition in the world judged by a cockatoo named Maude. As a writer in the Sun-Herald remarked, "It takes eleven galahs to judge the Archibald Prize, but only one cockatoo to judge the Bald Archys."

This art show is such fun it keeps on breaking its own attendance records wherever it is shown. This year sees the exhibition turning 21 but thankfully the show is as juvenile as ever.

The exhibition began in Canberra, certainly the funniest place in Australia, and is now making its way throughout Eastern Australia.

It is designed to appeal to the masses, and that's us rather than the art world that can be a tad pretentious at times. But don't take it too seriously that way you will feel free to enjoy the tongue in cheek humour.

You can still see this exhibition at the following venues.
