The Backyard Series: Dealing with Weeds.
I’ve personally never been much of a gardener, but am happy to pull out a weed or two as my contribution to gardening, even though I may not always be too sure if it’s actually a weed or not. Hubby loves working in the garden whilst I love to sit back and enjoy the resultant spectacular floral and greenery display.
Lantana - highly invasive, forms dense thickets that smother native vegetation. Manual hand removal or cut and paint. Ensure to bag and bin all parts of the plant. Image: Sunshine Coast Council FB
I am sure most Sunny Coasters know, or will soon come to realise that with all the rains that we’ve been experiencing, managing undesirable plants - weeds - can become an overwhelming chore. Many of us, myself included, struggle to identify what is a native versus an invasive plant and then lack the know-how on ways to effectively control or remove them. Sometimes, without realising it, we may avoid the task of dealing with the weeds, leading to the problem getting worse and possibly creating biosecurity risks, that may creep over fences or blow further afield in the breeze.

The fascinating and informative workshop
Dealing with Weeds, is presented by the Council’s Pest and Vector team, who are keen to share their knowledge and answer any questions you may have, to ensure you are equipped with the knowledge to more confidently control invasive plants. Come along to learn about different types of weeds, how to spot them and how to deal with them. You will learn how to reduce the risk of invasive plants becoming established and about different tools that are available to assist you with identifying and controlling these weeds in your backyard.
