Last week I caught 'The Authenticity Variety Hour' by James Fahy in the Downstairs Bar at The Butterfly Club in Carsons Lane Melbourne.

James is a musician who plays with the band Hi New Low and has a podcast Wait Long By The River on iTunes. You can keep up to date with James' gigs here and his latest EP in 2015 Habits .

If you're a Triple J Unearthed fan then you will dig this show. James gets up close and personal with three musicians about their lives, creative process and the stories behind their song writing. Each muso plays their latest songs and audience participation is encouraged and there is an ongoing discussion about what is 'authenticity' for a musician, and if it's important.

At first, I was not really sure what I was going to see or hear and I really didn't know anything much about James – because I'm Gen X and I'm not familiar with the hipster 'lingo'. However, by the end of the show I knew a little more about Americana music, and what our folk have been getting up to in the arts and music scene here and overseas. We have some talented folk in Melbourne and it's great to hear the ideas and stories behind the music.

First up James interviewed Joe Oppenheimer about his musical journey. Joe played a song he wrote called Flowers on the Bed about his grandfather's passing, and talked about his musical process and the question of 'authenticity' in performance and writing. You can listen to Joe's music here and catch his gig at Bar Open in Fitzroy on Thursday 16 June.

Robbie Coleman was our next guest and the founder of Two Buck Books . Robbie sells books for $2 and donates the proceeds to a different charity every month, and you can visit his latest store set up below Fancy Hank's in the old Mercat Hotel near Queen Victoria Market . Robbie has an eclectic background in writing and created a famous beer advertisement.

Last but not least was Emilee South described as 'Piaf meets Elvis', who is a rockin' hot folk-blues artist who divides her time between her homes in Melbourne, Hawaii, and St Tropez. You can catch Emilee around Melbourne town or while you are in Honolulu or France!

Stay tuned for James Fahy's next episode of 'The Authenticity Variety Hour' at a venue near you or catch his podcast.
