The Ballet Sleeping Beauty is now showing at the Sydney Opera House. This is truly an iconic ballet, graceful stylised and elegant.
On Thursday the 26th of November I had the pleasure of attending the dress rehearsal of The Sleeping Beauty. This is the much-anticipated world premiere of David MCallister's new production of Sleeping Beauty.
David MCallester is the Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet.
Although this a new production, it still has all the classical style that makes it a true classical ballet. The performances of Lana Jones as Sleeping Beauty is poetry in motion.
Sleeping Beauty is suitable for all ages. The wonderful thing about these fairytale ballets is that children just love them. Also children get an appreciation of ballet and the beautiful classical music that goes with it.
This is how I was introduced to ballet at a very young age. I learnt ballet for many years and am grateful for the appreciation it has given me of this wonderful art form. Sleeping Beauty is danced to Tchaikovsky's score. The music is beautiful expressive and at times full of joy.
This production has a fresh look delivered by Artistic Director David Mc Allister. Along with its perfect classical style some extra magic has been added. The Sleeping Beauty has many variations of theme which shows the amazing talent of The Australian Ballet Company. It has charm that will enchant the audience as they watch its magic.
Amber Scott is alluring as the Lilac Fairy, her dancing is stylised and expressive.
There is a gilded court and then that spell-shattering kiss from the handsome prince. Next this majestic beauty opens her eyes and this romantic fairytale comes to life. If this is not enough, there are fairies and bluebirds which will allow your imagination to take flight.
The photo below shows some of the newly designed costumes by Sydney costume designer Gabriela Tylesova. The costumes are magnificent, some of the best I have ever seen in a ballet production. Gabriela is a very talented designer and has used her skills to create these works of art.
At this time of year, Sleeping Beauty will be a very festive event. Amongst the audience there will be young princesses dressed in their fairy dresses. They will be wide eyed with wonderment caught up in the excitement of seeing this fairytale come alive.
The photo below will need no introduction to ballet lovers. A rare photo of Margret Fontenyn in Sleeping Beauty, Spain 1953.
If you are lucky enough to get a ticket to Sleeping Beauty, you are in for a treat. It is enchanting and you will come away with a big smile on your face.
