Built in the 1880s, The Austral Hotel along Rundle Street in Adelaide CBD offers both pub-style food and dishes that have a bit of an Asian flair to them. The portion size of many of their dishes is quite generous.
Their Sirloin Steak had a delectable charred flavour and the flesh which we had cooked to medium was not tough. The chips were fried to golden-brown and not too salty and the side salad added an element of freshness. The anchovy butter dressing that we chose added a hint of its distinctive flavour to the dish. If you prefer, the steak can instead be accompanied by your choice of sauce.

The coating of the crumbed portobello mushroom in the Shroom Burger was crispy, which contrasted well with the juicy interior. Tarragon butter and Hectic sauce complemented the mushroom well and the chips were just as good as that which came with the Sirloin Steak. The burger bun was also toasted to make it warm and firm.

Their Chicken Grain Salad Bowl had a generous amount of grilled chicken, which was cooked just right. The quinoa and buckwheat provided the salad with a nutty flavour, and the cherry tomatoes were juicy with a slightly sweet taste. For those concerned about the creamy taste of the walnut yoghurt dressing, it was not too thick.

We liked that the squid in the Salt & Pepper Squid was not tough, and the coating set off the squid well. Compared to other places offering a similar dish, the salt and pepper seasoning had a more Asian taste. Extra flavour was provided by the garlic, and slices of onion and capsicum added extra texture to the dish.

The heavy wood decor of the hotel gave it a rustic feel. Diners have the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Customers who visit the hotel on Tuesday nights can enjoy their Sirloin Steak at a cheaper price, as well as other steak dishes that are only offered on that day.
