Not your grandfather's attic
Melbourne would have to be one of the few cities where it's easy to wander into a bar and accidentally end up in another one entirely. Not that anyone's complaining if the other bar is as good as The Attic.

A planned visit to The Black Pearl on Brunswick Street and a curious climb up the back stairs led us into The Attic, the more subdued sister to its popular sibling downstairs.

The Attic has the feel of your grandfather's attic with craypots hanging from the ceiling and knick-knacks, picture frames and glass bottles covering the walls - that is assuming your grandfather grew up in the Deep South, as with drinks like 'Tennessee Safe Kicker' and 'The GFC Cocktail' the bar has the laid-back vibe of a New Orleans speakeasy.

Unlike The Black Pearl, it's strictly table service and the attentive staff are more than happy to help you choose amongst the delicious in-house creations. The cocktails aren't cheap but worth every penny and if they're not your thing there's an excellent wine and beer list to choose from.

We snagged a table for seven after only a five minute wait and sipped our drinks under the bar's large bay window overlooking Brunswick Street - a perfect spot for people watching.

The bar also offers a short but well-thought out food menu if you're feeling a little peckish.

If you're looking for a post-work or post-dinner drink (or three) you can't go wrong at The Attic.
