The Astor Theatre in St. Kilda is one of the jewels of Melbourne cinema.

Built in the 1930s, in an understated and elegant version of Art Deco, the Astor is kept in top condition and transports the movie lover back in time to the golden age of 20th Century Cinema.

In fact the Astor has the best of both worlds: charm and style combined with the latest in Dolby Digital sound and a huge screen.

Here are some pictures:

There is only screen at the Astor so you are limited to what is being shown at the time, presenting "a mix of older films and recent releases along with special seasons of major re-releases such as Ben-Hur and Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window".

Most weeknights (and some Saturdays) the Astor has double features, along with matinees on Sunday. To see what's on at the moment go the Astor homepage.

Note that this Sunday night the Astor will be showing The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, one of the best films of al time.

The Astor is located at the intersection of Chapel Street and Dandenong Road in St. Kilda. This page has good instructions for tram, train, and bus.

Why? See your movies in style.
