When it comes to getting your hands dirty one could not ask for a better setting than by the sea. After all, once you are completely saturated with sand you just need to walk into the "massive swimming pool" and have a quick dip. And as a parents, I can guarantee you that this is one place I encourage the kids to go crazy with all the dirty hands as possible.

Sand sculpture is actually an art. You will be amazed at what people can create from sand, water and a few "tools". It is also one of the most cost effective measures to engaging with your creative side. So many art forms require copious amounts of money, which I don't have a lot of. And building sandcastles is a lot more fun because more than one person can partake in this activity.

The downside of building a sandcastle is that it is not something you can hang on the wall. However, cameras are made for a reason, and this would be one of those reasons where you can capture your art from many angles and then hang it on the wall. It would also make one interesting conversation piece.

The trick to creating a master piece sand sculpture is to ensure that you are far enough from the water's edge, so that the water does not wash your work away, but close enough so you don't have to walk a mile to fetch some water. Oddly enough, that sounds very familiar to "Jack and Jill went up the Hill to fetch a pale of water!" Maybe Jack and Jill were creating sandcastles, and they were just not close enough to the water's edge. I knew there was a lesson to be learnt in that Rhyme!

The other tools you probably need to build this sand castle masterpiece are a bucket and a spade. The spade is to dig and create. You will be amazed out how many parts of that spade you can use when creating this piece of work! The bucket has a two-fold purpose. Apart from carrying water, it can also be used for design (such as a castle). Of course we have often arrived at the beach without either of the tools which resulted in using an old coffee cup as the alternative. Talk about creative recycling!

Beach sand covers a huge range on the "wetness scale". Of course the closer to the waterline, the more saturated the water. Creating Sand Art requires sand to be wet enough so that you can mould it into a shape yet not too wet that it just flops down like pancake batter. It has to hold its form. In a way, kids are learning about construction and cement. And, it is all for free right on our beach.

Of course, the best way to helping little minds to create is to just assist. Most the time you will be the one fetching "the pale of water" and doing a little digging. However, on the most half, you will be cherishing a moment in time that I guarantee will NEVER be forgotten.
