After losing her husband, Freya Miller is forced to sell her home. She and her five-year-old daughter, Skye, need a new place to live as quickly as possible. Seemingly by chance, Freya runs into the elderly Dr Marsden, who is looking for new residents for an apartment in Adder House, a beautiful building in an upmarket area. He offers it to Freya for a peppercorn rent, saying that the compatibility of the residents is more important to him than the money.

It sounds too good to be true, but Freya is pretty desperate to move. Soon after moving in, strange events start to happen that leave both Freya and Skye feeling unsettled. Freya resolves to get to the bottom of what happened to the previous tenants of her apartment before the creeping sense of dread she is feeling unravels her sanity.

The Apartment is the latest psychological thriller by K.L. Slater, the bestselling author of Single and Closer . It is quite tense and creepy, and the segments about a series of historical psychological experiments performed on a child added an extra layer of intrigue to the plot.

As with all of KL Slater's books, there are a few plot twists, including one at the end which I thought was a bit far-fetched. I also found it a little annoying that Freya was so ready to go along with the idea of staying in the flat for so little money, which seemed like such an obvious trap, but once I suspended my disbelief about that I could still enjoy the story.

The Apartment is a tense psychological thriller which will appeal to fans of KL Slater's other books. The paperback will be published in April. The audiobook version, available on Audible , is beautifully narrated by Tuppence Middleton, who plays Riley Blue in the Netflix series Sense8. It includes interviews with both the author and the narrator.
