An innovative arts school will open its doors in the heart of Subiaco this September, providing a serious focus for those wanting to learn more about the acting profession.

is the brainchild of Amanda Crewes, a former WA Academy of Performing Arts graduate, who wanted to establish a facility similar to Sydney's Actors Centre and Melbourne's 16th Street.

"Nothing like this is currently operating in Perth," she said. "I wanted to develop a true hub where people could focus on the craft of acting, working with industry professionals as much as possible.

"The art of acting is, in some ways, the most exacting art of all and, without constant schooling, the actor will stop halfway.

"In response to this understanding we have established , a new centre for excellence in performing arts.

"It will provide ongoing support for actors to develop their skills, whether they are currently working within the industry or just starting out, trying to make a name for the themselves."

Crewes said her aim is to build a solid reputation for what is doing – so potential students, aged 16 to 30, must audition beforehand.

"By doing various modules across different areas, can very much be seen as delivering an industry preparation course or helping people studying their WA Certificate of Education," she said.

"It's a chance to learn film and television skills, different styles of theatres, approaches of different practitioners and how to prepare for auditions, go from script to performance and create different character masks."

After graduating from WAAPA in 1998, Crewes went on to work professionally with Effie Crump, Class Act, Handzon, Agelink, Kompany M, Melbourne's Playbox and Barking Gecko Theatres, Dirty Dicks Theatre Restaurant and the Perth Theatre Company.

She has performed with several professional independent theatre groups in shows such as Italian American Reconciliation, Wolfe Lullaby and Conundrum, which earned her an Equity Guild Award nomination for best supporting actress, and also works extensively as a secondary school drama teacher.

Launching on September 3, will be located at the Subiaco Arts Centre.

"An incredible amount of interest has already been shown by industry professionals wanting to teach workshops and maintain their skills, participating in workshops working alongside other industry professionals," Crewes said.

"Actors will learn how to sing, move and dance, giving them more options in the marketplace, and there will be performance opportunities so they can put what they've learnt into practice in front of agents and other key industry players.

"The idea is to make it a true actors' hub – hence the name – and, given the location is already strongly connected with the arts, it seemed an ideal place for people to learn more skills relating to the dramatic arts."

The company is currently going through the process of accreditation so it can offer a nationally-recognised advanced diploma and certificates in acting that can be completed full-time or part-time in 2013.

Initially, in 2012, classes will be held in the evenings, totaling no more than six hours a week.
