The 2016 season of
Castle Hill Players concludes with a tense courtroom thriller.
The Accused by Jeffrey Archer has two endings. The audience on the night chooses the ending via their "verdict".
The action takes place over three days in a court room of the Old Bailey. The audience is the jury and are asked to rise when the judge enters. All the testimony and the judge's remarks are directed towards the audience. The witnesses enter through the foyer side doors to take their place in the witness box on the stage.
The costuming is authentic and the set design is simple but effective. The stunning backdrop provides colour to the largely monochrome courtroom. Everyone, actors and audience alike take their roles seriously and it is important to take note of all the evidence as well as the asides from the learned counsel and their aides.
After the 20 minute interval with complimentary tea & biscuits, a red token is handed to the audience/jury. After testimony from the accused and closing remarks, the jury is asked to decide on the guilt or otherwise of Dr Sherwood and the play concludes. The verdict is announced and the courtroom reacts. There was a guilty verdict on the night we went, but I will not give the ending away.
There are only two performances left this year but I am looking forward to
Calendar Girls in February to commence the 2017 season.
