After conquering the 1000 Steps in Ferntree Gully, it was time for a well-earned brunch. Located at the base of the trail, the 1000 Steps Café (formerly known as the Tree Frog Café) is a relaxing place to stop after the walk.

I ordered the eggs benedict; two poached eggs drizzled in hollandaise sauce, atop ham and two slices of bread. Despite almost half an hour of waiting for my order to come out, by which time I had developed quite the appetite, I was a little unimpressed. The two slices of bread were miniature, leaving very little to mop up the egg with. The pieces of ham were thick and fatty- not exactly what you want after having just worked up a sweat. At least the eggs were poached to perfection, with just enough hollandaise sauce to give the flavour without smothering the eggs.
The lady serving us was quite happy to change my friend's order, swapping the bacon for salmon at no extra charge. Unfortunately they made a mistake on the order, bringing out a breakfast dish with both bacon and salmon. By the time they made a new breakfast sans bacon, another twenty minutes had past and I had all but finished my dish. At least this meant that they didn't simply take away the dish and remove the bacon before bringing it back.
While I was not so impressed with the 1000 Steps Café, they have no competitor in sight. It's convenient if you emerge from the track dying for a bite to eat, and it won't undo all your hard work on the steps. It has quite a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after the walk, but next time I might stop for a coffee rather than for a breakfast dish.
