There's nothing quite like a menu offering 'all day' breakfasts to start you rocking a holiday vibe. So, in simply providing me with the perfect excuse to sleep late, Coolangatta's delicious new cafe That Blue House had me seriously smitten from first glance.
Situated on Dutton Street, a hop, skip and sashay from the beachfront, That Blue House is, well, a blue house, which was apparently transported from Toowoomba to its current location. This small retro dwelling is dwarfed by the towers surrounding it, which only adds to its incongruous charm.
Stepping inside That Blue House, which promises 'food. coffee. good vibes', feels like living it up at the beach house of a rich but relaxed best friend. And this friend has two paradoxical goals in mind - to nourish you, and to leave you wanting more.
For when you're done with the divine Eggs Benedict (served with your choice of bacon, ham or smoked trout), you'll start wondering what the French toast with honey cinnamon mascarpone, grilled banana and seasonal fruit is like. And when you've satisfied your curiosity with respect to that, you'll find your mind wandering in the direction of the breakfast tostada, the corn and chilli fritters, the mushroom bruschetta, or the avo smash.
For those strange folks who can't envisage eating eggs any later than midday, there are respectable lunch options too, like the BLT (with avocado if you wish), grilled chicken sandwiches on Turkish bread, and sourdough melt with cheese and sliced ham. There are vegetarian options also, including a mouth-watering array of salads in the glass cabinet. Sweets, including bliss balls, can be found there too.
At That Blue House, smoothies blended on site and milkshakes for kids of all ages feature on the drinks menu which occupies a whole page on its own. Coffee by Brisbane's Bear Bones is always a standout while those who prefer chai, hot chocolate, or matcha, will also find lots to love.
If you fear you've over-indulged, you can always walk it off with a promenade along the beach front. You might see me there, with the wind in my hair, a smile on my face, and trouser buttons that are far too tight.
