Tharen's claim to fame is that it is 'Sydney's first and only fancy dress restaurant with 5-star dining'. The venue has been on my hit list for quite some time now and recently a voucher popped up offering $19 per person for 3 courses and a $30 voucher to come back later. For "5-star dining" this is fantastic value!

Booking was quite difficult as the restaurant is a favourite for hens nights and books up months in advance for Friday and Saturday nights. Though it is open during the week, and the restaurant took our booking for a week night, we were cancelled on that day as they had no other bookings and could not afford to open for us.

Our voucher was due to expire soon after, so the owner, Harry, told us we could come in after the expiry date and booked us for a Saturday night the next month. Our booking was at 7 and we arrived promptly and were taken upstairs to be seated. (Seating goes over both levels).

On each chair was a different hat ranging from the expected policeman and sailor to the outrageous hot dog and flamingo - with everything from mad hatter to sultan in between.

As we were the first in the restaurant, we had free choice of hats.

The parties rolled in slowly and garlic bread and salad were served around 7:30. The menu offers a selection of entrées and mains, whilst the dessert is a set bombe alaska.

We sampled the arancini, prosciutto rolled chicken stuffed with pesto and goats cheese tart for entrées. All were quite good. The base on the tart was a tad too dry and tasted like the base of a soft meat pie. The macadamia nuts were a nice touch though.

Next was the entertainment from Prada Clutch. She is the resident drag queen. Decked in high heels and long sparkly dress with high pink wig, she whirled through the room greeting each table and discussing what brought them to the restaurant that night. She was fun but a bit bland as far as entertainment is concerned, and as it was creeping towards 10pm, we were wanting our main courses. Prada finished with two songs and the mains started to dribble out from the kitchen.

Our table ordered the three cheese stuffed chicken, the leg of lamb and two portions of mussels. The two meat dishes came out and though hungry, those who ordered them politely waited for the mussels to arrive so we could all begin our meals together. Time went on though and to prevent the dishes from getting cold, they dug into their food. It was not until well after they were finished and their plates were collected that we were asked if we were still waiting on mussels We were then asked again and offered a free shot as an apology. The mussels came out soon after with a fresh bread roll.

Soon after, the bombe alaskas began to roll out. The fancy dress clad waiters poured lit alcohol over the top and we watched the flame up on each large table. They were then taken away and sliced up. Even though we were the smallest table (and one of the only tables still seated as most parties were up dancing by now) we were the last to receive the ice cream dessert, whilst plates of it served earlier melted away at unattended tables. The cake was sweet and tasty and finished the meal nicely but as it was now after 11pm and we had sufficiently eaten, played swap the hats and sung our hearts out to likes of Abba and The Sound of Music, we were ready to call it a night.

Tharen's would be fun in a large group or for a celebration but for a date night or catch up with friends - I probably don't recommend it as it's crowded and noisy.
