Located across the road from
Regency Tavern , is where you can enjoy rarely seen Nepalese dishes. It was quite popular with the locals with a crowd of a decent size when we visited.
Their Buff Sukuti notably features dried buffalo meat which had a taste similar to beef and were fried sufficiently to give them a firm texture. The degree of the spiciness of the sauce is suitable for those not used to spicy foods. A scattering of chopped coriander and spring onions provided some freshness.
There was about a 25-minute wait time for the Chilli Chicken but the wait was worth it. The flesh of the chicken was cooked just right, set off nicely by the crisp coating. The sauce that the chicken was tossed in gave it a delectable spicy taste that was not too hot. Slices of capsicum were included to provide some balance with their sweetness.
Momo is a type of steamed dumpling from Nepalese cuisine. Diners have the choice of a chicken or vegetable filling. The vegetable filling that we chose was juicy with a background gingery taste and the skin of the dumplings were not too chewy. The Jhol Momo presents the dumplings in a curry-based sauce that tasted similar to Korma curry.
As its name suggests, the Alu Nimki features the Nepalese snack Nimki which consists of spiced dough that is deep-fried to resemble crackers. The Nimki were delightfully crisp and the tomato sauce they were tossed in gave them a slightly sweet flavour with the spices providing some kick. We also like that the consistency of the sauce was that which preserved the Nimki's crispness.
The pork that we chose for the Chow Mein was fried in a way to resemble jerky, without making the flesh too tough. The amount of sauce that the noodles were tossed in was sufficient to prevent the dish from being too dry but be aware that it has quite a spicy kick. A lemon wedge was provided with the dish for those that desire to add a hint of tanginess.
The décor of the restaurant gave it a casual feel with the tables spaced a good distance apart from each other. Available at the counter for purchase are crackers dusted with a spice mix.
