No list of the 'best fine dining restaurants in Sydney' would be complete without mention of . You've probably already heard of Tetsuya's given it was awarded the inaugural People's Choice Award in the 2011 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, and is also one of Sydney's few internationally renowned restaurants.

Discretely located in a heritage-listed site right in the heart of the Sydney CBD, it would be easy to wander right by this iconic establishment and not know that behind the imposing entrance is a "high temple of gastronomy".

I had the pleasure of dining at Tetsuya's for my birthday and it was definitely a birthday to remember. My partner had booked well in advance and had mentioned that it was my birthday when he made the reservation. Someone obviously made a note of this as when we sat down to our table, I found a personalised menu with a special birthday wish, just for me.

Food

A meal at Tetsuya's can best be described as a complete sensory delight, with a smorgasbord of flavours, textures, colours and aromas. Tetsuya's presents a ten course degustation menu, with a wine paring option. The menu is based on the Japanese philosophy of using seasonal flavours and so is constantly changing.

Every dish that was presented was beautifully crafted and showcased spectacular technique. It was obvious that each dish had been engineered with precision to ensure that every element added to the overall experience.

Special mention has to go to the ever humble 'bread and butter' - in this case, for the butter. Tetsuya's own blend of Unsalted Butter with Truffle and Ricotta is absolutely to die for and in itself could qualify as one of Tetsuya's signature dishes.

Below is a sample of the dishes we were served.

You can view a sample menu on Tetsuya's website . The ten course degustation menu is currently $210 per person, with a wine pairing available for an additional $97 per person.

Ambience

Tetsuya's dining area is split into three smaller rooms, which means that they can fit a lot of tables in without the atmosphere becoming crowded or busy and the result is a delightfully intimate experience. The ambience is serene, the lighting is romantic and combined with the outlook over a picturesque Japanese garden you'd be forgiven for forgetting you were in fact in the heart of Sydney's bustling CBD.

Service

Service was personal and impeccable. We really felt we didn't have to lift a finger during the meal, it was as though our every need was anticipated even before we realised we needed it. Wine glasses and water were never empty, bread was replenished with perfect timing, and each course was introduced with exacting detail with a perfect pause between each dish.

As I mentioned above, it was my birthday on this particular night. The waitstaff were able to make me feel very special with a birthday dessert, all without causing a ripple in the ambience for the surrounding tables.

Notes

One thing to keep in mind is you'll need to book well ahead, especially if you have a particular date in mind, as the restaurant can be fully booked up to six months in advance.
