For more than 50 years, the world-renowned Tesselaar's Tulip Festival has opened its "working tulip farm" to visitors. And visitors come from all over Australia, as well as overseas to walk among more than half a million tulips, consisting of more than a hundred different varieties. A camera is a must.
About an hour's drive from Melbourne, Tesselaar's Tulip Farm is situated at 357 Monbulk Road, SILVAN, 3795. (Melway Map 129 B5). There is free off road parking, and dogs on leads are welcome. There are some bitumen paths through the display gardens, however access from the carpark and to the tulip fields is by gravel paths.
With live entertainment every day, plus market stalls, this year there will be a Sculpture competition. Renowned sculptors from all around Australia will be exhibiting their works. With a competition for visitors to choose their favourite, the sculpture that wins this year's competition will become a permanent feature of the Gardens.
There's plenty of food available - try the Dutch Poffertjes and croquettes.
Tesselaar's recommend pre-booking tickets to save time from waiting in line.
On the weekend of 21st to 23rd September, there will be a Dutch Weekend. Wear your own clogs and join in with many others in experiencing all things Dutch - folk dancing, costumes, games, and of course traditional foods.
Having visited this Tulip Farm more than a dozen times in recent years, this is one venue I heartily recommend that visitors to the Dandenongs must include in their itinerary.
