The golden hour in landscape photography.

That spectacular half hour after sunrise and before sunset, when the sunlight is diffused and warm, and the shadows are soft and forgiving.

As the summer sun rises, this comforting shroud fades all too quickly to the harsh high-contrast glare of reflective surfaces and the sharp edges of crisp shadows.

Point a camera at something and a perspective is being presented. The same scene can look different through an ultrawide, a fisheye, or a telephoto lens. Take the shot and multiple other combinations come into play. The effect of a polarising/neutral density/warming filter screwed to the front. The white balance. Focus. ISO. Shutter speed. Aperture. Multiple stacked exposures.

On transferring the image to a computer, image editing software is used for further changes. Saturation, colour correction, contrast, highlights and sharpness being some of the variables.

But what if you could make these changes in real-time, all the time?

What if you could wear sunglasses that, rather than just cut out the light, functioned like colour correction or warming filters, bolted to your eyeballs?

That's the premise of . Developed by a small group of photographers in Edinburgh, they first crowdfunded their original lens in 2014 on Indiegogo and Kickstarter, and more recently in 2019 released "Spectachrome," their second lens. Their first adds warm and rich colours while their second aims to evoke the point of view of a vintage postcard from the 1970s, or the colour grading reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film.

I find that the former is in some ways similar to a graduated 81D warming filter or a warming polariser.

Italian Mazzuchelli acetate frames allegedly sourced from renewable plant based sources house UV400 protection polymer lenses mounted on a sturdy wireframe and hinge system, and a there are several frame designs available.

Passing them around result in reactions ranging from awestruck proclamations of the best sunglasses ever to remarks on rose-tinted glasses, comparisons to Ballhawks Glasses and "I dunno, It's like if you were wearing ski goggles all the time."

If you have a preference for bumping up the saturation and detail in your photographs with a warm light effect rather than cutting out all the colours more equally, Tens glasses may be an interesting addition to your collection of frames.
