Walking. Certainly, the most popular activity around this 2.5 km track that circumnavigates the lake's edge. Some people just slowly wander, often with small children on foot or in pushers. Others are 'get fit' fans whose mission is to get fit. Then there are the serious joggers, who can pass you several times while on your leisurely stroll.

Many walkers bring their canine friends, some with two doggies. There is an off-leash area at the northern end of the lake for those who just want to watch their dog get the exercise.

Cycling. These are the fastest things on the track as many think it is a race track, but fortunately, most are just out for a leisurely pedal. It is an ideal and safe venue for children to hone their cycling skills.

On a fine evening, after a hot summer's day, it is not unusual to see several hundred people spread out around the lake.

Kayaking. Any time of the day, except perhaps on inclement weather days there are numerous one, two or four person craft paddling around the calm waters. It is a BYOK (bring your own kayak) area.

Sailing. Small one and two person yachts are often seen with their colourful sails billowing in the breeze or sometimes becalmed in the middle of the lake.

Fishing. It seems a popular pastime, but my observations are that it is just pastime. The lake is frequently stocked with rainbow trout. On my many walks around the lake, I have only seen these optimistic anglers catch two fish. Well, one fish and an eel. I really feel like directing them to the nearest fish and chip shop if a feed is their aim.

If you are over 18 and under 70 you require a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence to practice your angling.

Fly fishing. The Yarra Valley Fly Fishers have their clubrooms at Lilydale Lake and apart from their regular meetings, they teach all-comers the art of fly fishing. Personally, I prefer to catch my flies with a can of Mortein.

Model boats. Radio controlled model sailing boats are often seen sailing around near the short pier with the owners directing their charges with hand-held transmitters. A very interesting pastime to just watch.

Swimming. There is a sandy beach area with shallow water where many parents and children gather and paddle in the shallows on hot days. More adventurous adults can often be seen swimming in the deeper water. Because the lake is fed by the Olinda Creek, it is not recommended for swimming after heavy rain.

Playground. The newly renovated and expanded playground is extremely popular with children of all ages.

BBQ and Picnics. Barbeques are spread around the grassy area with many picnic benches. It is very popular with groups celebrating an occasion or just groups of friends and families enjoying a get-together.

There are toilet facilities and at busy times a food and coffee van.

Overall Lilydale Lake caters for a myriad of activities.
