Tucked away behind a busy highway in Cannington, is the Canning River Regional Park. Kent Street Weir is situated within the regional park and is bustling with many fun things to do.

1. Have A Picnic

The open expanses of grassed areas at Kent Street Weir makes it the perfect spot to bring your family and friends down for a picnic. It is easy to pick a good sport for the picnic blanket as there are nice flat grounds and several shady trees. There are also BBQs for use if you prefer. Families with small children may want to choose an area closer to the playground for ease of supervision.

**2. Enjoy A Bushwalk

**The park has several paved paths on which you could go for a walk or ride on, throughout the park. Many younger children can be seen proudly and independently riding around on their bikes or scooters on the safe tracks. Snakes are seasonally active around the park and during our visit, a large dugite crossed the path in front of us, so make sure you are vigilant even when travelling along the sealed paths.

3. Go For A Paddle

Many people can be spotted canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding at the weir. The calm waters makes this area a perfect place for beginners or for people wanting to go for a relaxing paddle up and down the Canning River.

4. Visit The Eco-Education Centre

An eco-education centre is situated at the Kent Street Weir for interested people to pop in to have a look around. Inside there is plenty of information about the flora and fauna that exists within the park and there are even displays created by visiting school groups. There is also a hands on display which encourages people to interact and safely touch things that can be found around the park.

**5. Grab A Snack At The Café
**
The Canning River Café is situated at the park and is open from 7am till 4pm on weekdays and from 7am till 5pm on weekends. There is always a steady flow of hungry customers so if you are planning to visit the café with a big group, it is worth booking ahead of time. Fully stocked with a range of refreshments, cold ice creams and delicious meals, this café is very popular with visitors to the park.

6. Take On The BMX Track

Get the children to bring their BMX bikes down and let them loose on the BMX track that is at the park. Make sure they are safe with their helmets and other protective clothing and those who are under 10 years of age need to be supervised by an adult.

7. Go For A Train Ride

Train rides on the Castledare Miniature Railway are available on the third Sunday of every month from 10am till 2pm. Riders must wear enclosed footwear and a ticket will set you back $6 for an adult and $3 for children. Visit their website for extra opening times over the school holidays.

8. Walk To Mason's Landing And Woodloes Homestead

These two historical places of interest are about a 2.5km walk from the weir. Following the walking path and the signs along the way, you should be able to navigate your way to there.

At Mason's Landing, there is a playground, toilets, BBQs and an area to launch canoes and kayaks from. This spot is a good alternative to setting up base at Kent Street Weir.

The 1874 built Woodloes Homestead is WA's first architect designed homestead built south of the river. It is nestled between modern houses right at the end of Woodloes Street in Cannington. The homestead is open for tours on the first and third Sunday of every month from 2pm till 5pm. Entry costs $2 for adults and $1 for children and seniors.

9. Go Birdspotting

The amount of birdlife that live in the Canning River Regional Park is amazing. You could easily spot up to a dozen different types of birds as you way make your way around the park.

10. Join The Park Runners

For the more active visitors, why not come down early for a run around the park. Park Run is a volunteer running group who mark out a timed 5km track for locals to run, walk, jog along. Park runners meet at Kent Street Weir every Saturday morning and start their run at 8am. It's a free fun run and open to anyone that wants to join in. A great way to see the park and get some exercise in at the same time.
