Adelaide's Meatiest Bánh Mě?
Over the last few years the Vietnamese Pork Roll, or "Bánh mě" has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity, with the fresh, flavoursome and fiery rolls a lunchtime staple for many. This has driven an improvement in the quality of the components. Soft crusts, overcooked meat and wilted vegetables have all but vanished.

For a Bánh mě vendor to remain popular in Adelaide's competitive lunchtime market, a mastery of contrasts is instrumental. The bun must demonstrate a crunchy crust yet yield to a soft, airy and chewy texture. The mild acid of lightly pickled, crispy carrot and daikon must complement moreish, rich pork belly, smooth pate and deliquescent egg butter. Lastly, the burn of tiny chillies and aromatic herbs discipline the entire symphony as a conductor to an orchestra with a mouth-watering piquancy stopping short of being an overpowering mouthful of fire.

Temptasian takeaway on Goodwood Road in Daw Park serve a small selection of lunchtime items, the most popular of which are their Bánh mě. For around $5, the small but busy eatery runs a brisk trade with the rolls. Their carrot and daikon pickle are julienned more thinly than most other Bánh mě shops and an order "with the lot" comes with the unusual addition of sliced tomato to the roll, but the bun is almost overflowing with juicy, perfectly cooked pork belly. A variety of other meat options are available beyond the usual nem nuong (meatball slice) and char siu (barbecued pork) with other meats available including butter chicken, Thai chicken, teriyaki chicken and spring rolls. Other menu items include cold rolls, taco bao, pho, pud thai and chicken curry.
