The thing that always interests me on travels is the interesting names of towns; some I feel could come straight out of storybooks and yet there they are, a landmark and home to some.

The City of Tea Tree Gully can be located at the foothills and outer north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide. It was settled in 1850, then being known as the Village of Steventon, named after a local resident John Stevens who was a major landowner in the area. Being first proclaimed in October 1858 as the District Council of Tea Tree Gully, the City of Tea Tree Gully now has a population over 100,000 residents.

It is also the home to the Tea Tree Gully Heritage Museum , which is owned and run by The National Trust of South Australia. The centrepiece of the museum is the ex- Highercombe Hotel , which opened in 1854 and served as a hotel, lodge meetings, post office, a school room, community meetings, dances and residence for a private family and officers from the post and teaching professions. In 1855, qualified voters petitioned the Governor of South Australia to name the hotel as a polling place for elections as it appeared to be in a more central place than the current town. The petition was granted and thereby in 1875, a main road was re-routed past the front door on the hotel making it a major stopping place for coaches and change of horses. The hotel closed its doors in 1878.

Run by volunteers of the National Trust of South Australia , the museum holds themed tours throughout the year for adults and children with regular school tours, which assist in teaching our youth the many aspects of national history. This includes being introduced to the history of the area, the building and the opportunity to experience lifestyles back in the 1850s to 1950s. Some hands-on activities are included.

This year, during the Winter School Holidays, the museum is celebrating the "Teddy" from Wednesday 11th to Sunday 15th July 2018. Children are encouraged to bring their own teddy so he or she has an outing to meet some of his or her relatives.

The Teddy Bear Tales & Tails event will be open from 10.00am to 2.00pm daily with hands-on experiences for the children. Children will hear about some of the famous bears and celebrate Paddington's 60th anniversary year. Have you ever thought what sort of mischief Teddy's get up to when you are asleep? Cost of the event is $3.00.

The above event coincides with the normal third Sunday of the Month "Heritage on Sunday" and for this month, it will run longer from 10.00 am to 2.00pm. The museum is always looking for volunteers and if you think opportunities such as gardener, actor, speaker, cleaner, maintenance, researcher, fundraiser, web-master, event organiser, tour group host, display arranger, data entry person, craft-maker for gift shop, collection cataloguer, school group host is for you, please visit their website.

See you at Tea Tree Gully Heritage Museum these school holidays. Don't forget to check out the up-coming events.
