Australian premiere of an award-winning American play

Tickets are now on sale for The Depot Theatre's strictly limited season of Technicolor Life, a critically acclaimed and multi award-winning play by celebrated American playwright Jami Brandli. The Australian premiere season will run from 26th July to 12 August 2017.

Technicolor Life is a bold, moving and magical celebration of life, love and missing parts through the female gaze. It vividly explores how a family copes when a wounded soldier returns home and attempts re-entry into 'civilian life'.

Billie, a young Iraq War soldier, loses her left hand and is sent home. Billie's book smart teenage sister, Maxine, with the help of her new imaginary friends - Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - and her mother, Susan, attempt to help Billie, but she refuses to talk about her war experience. Billie and Maxine's grandmother, Franny moves into the household bringing her twenty wigs, love for old American musicals, wine coolers and cigarettes. Franny has a plan for a good-bye party that threatens to tear the family even further apart.
Technicolor Life was first staged by Rep Stage as part of the Women's Voices Theater Festival in Maryland in 2015. The Australian premiere is part of The Depot Theatre's 2017 Season. It is directed by co-artistic director, Julie Baz and designed by fellow co-artistic director, David Jeffrey with lighting designer, Mehran Mortezaei. The musical and choreographic elements are directed by Robert Allan.

The show features a terrific line-up of some of Sydney's best indie theatre talent, including Amy-Victoria Brooks, Nyssa Hamilton, Michael Harrs, James Martin, Tasha O'Brien, Cherilyn Price, Emily Sulzberger and Cherrie Whalen-David.

Jami Brandli received the John Gassner Memorial Playwriting Award, the Holland New Voices Award and The Aurora Theatre Company's 2014 Global Age Project (GAP) Prize for Technicolor Life. Her play Bliss (or Emily Post is Dead!) was named in The Kilroy's THE LIST. Brandli was also nominated for the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Award and a finalist for the Disney ABC TV Fellowship.
