With the altar in darkness, St Luke's took on an ethereal quality, enhanced by the welcoming notes from the piano. Lance Clarke (B.Mus) Teacher, warmed up the ivories as his fingers danced like ballerinas, a foretaste of the coming performance. Also an arranger and composer, Clarke transported us to the poignant past of Frederic Francois Chopin.
The recital was the last in a series of four and the focus was on works from the final chapter of Chopin's life. Clarke effortlessly performed ten pieces, including Polonaise (Heroic), the Minute Waltz and Etude (Revolutionary), interspersing them with amusing and educational anecdotes.
Heavy stone columns and exquisite stained-glass windows in midnight-blue, appeared to repose as if enraptured by the sound resonating around them.
The recital was followed by a simple afternoon tea, included in the entry fee.
On 19 July at 3:00pm, St Luke's will be hosting the Jacaranda Trio featuring gifted flautist
Nicola Hayden . Additionally 'Ukes at St Luke's' happens every second Sunday 3pm, entry by gold coin donation.
