Libraries used to be places of strict quietness and pristine cleanliness; certainly no food or drink was permitted, let alone a tea party the likes of
, coming to Williamstown Library on 17 March as part of Hobsons Bay's
Cultural Diversity Week celebrations.
You are invited to enjoy a cuppa with friends from all over the world, hosted by
Vue de Monde's first ever Tea Sommelier, tea connoisseur
Sarah Cowell of
Teasense . You'll get to try different kinds of tea, learn how to distinguish their flavours and discover the best brewing techniques to bring out the finest characteristics in each one.
Cultural Diversity Week is Victoria's annual celebration of multiculturalism, centred around the United Nations
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March, or
Harmony Day as it is better known in Australia, and highlighted with the colour orange decorating schools, community centres, town halls and everything in between. This year,
Cultural Diversity Week will run from 14 to 22 March, and in keeping with tradition, orange ribbons will be on hand for
Tea 101 guests to wear as a pledge not to commit, condone or remain silent about any form of racial or religious discrimination.
The
2011 Census data shows us that Victorians come from more than 200 different countries, speak over 260 languages and follow around 135 faiths.
Cultural Diversity Week is an opportunity to celebrate these differences - which have helped forge the strong, interesting, unique and harmonious society we are today - as well as what we all have in common.
Register
online to enjoy a good old-fashioned chin-wag along with an expertly brewed cup of tea, and celebrate the rich blend multiculturalism has brought to our great country at
