Tasting Australia 2014 is an internationally recognised biennial food festival held in Adelaide and the scenic regions of South Australia from April 27 to May 4.

This enormously popular food and wine festival attracts around 50,000 people including interstate and international visitors, and celebrates everything to do with eating and drinking.

The theme of Tasting Australia this year is Origins, recognising the importance of a sense of place. The regions of South Australia contribute so much to our tables and our culture that this recognition is truly significant. Origins are a part of our tasting experience - from our climates and soils, to our regional restaurants and pubs, the produce that the regions are noted for, and the people who create what we consume.

The Tasting Australia's Creative Directors Simon Bryant and Paul Henry have developed an eclectic program which includes a huge range of events in Adelaide and South Australian country areas, with things to suit all budgets and interests. To help you navigate your way through the smorgasbord of sessions, you can either download the full program or an app for your iPhone or Android phone.

Tasting Australia Origins Dinner
One of the event highlights this year will be the Tasting Australia Origins Dinner , where 30 local, national and international chefs will use premium produce from South Australia to delight and surprise their 300 guests at an (as yet) unknown location. Of course the feast will be lubricated by some of the finest South Australian wine and spirits, so there's no need to BYO.

Town Square
The attractively renovated Victoria Square will be the location for Town Square , a hub operating throughout the festival with different things to see and do every day.

Tasting Australia 2014 kicks off with a special Fork on the Road on Sunday April 27 in Victoria Square, and this perennially popular event is bound to be a festival highlight. It's quite appropriate as it is the first time that Fork on the Road has returned to Victoria Square after meandering about in Adelaide's parklands.

Eat Sessions
Every day in Town Square you can catch your favourite celebrity chefs sharing their food, memories, and favourite recipes around lunch time. Here's just a sample of these amazing free sessions :
  • Watch Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant recreate dishes from their favourite episodes of The Cook and The Chef
  • Learn about the evolution of Cheong Liew's signature dish "Four Dances of the Sea"
  • See Rodney Dunn and Costa Georgiadis cook with weeds, from King Henry to nettles

  • Share Sessions at Town Square
Share Sessions are 45 minute cooking classes (not free) from world class cooks and food producers including Poh Ling Yeow, Sky Gyngell, Callum Hann and Jon Lark. There's even Kids in the Kitchen with activities for kids - they will pick their own produce then head to the kitchen for a cooking class with Callum Hann.

    Stephanie Alexander Edible Gardens
The Town Square is dotted with edible gardens designed by eight South Australian schools involved with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. Take a stroll through them and pick up tips for your own home veggie patch.

    Think Sessions
These free expert panel discussions will tackle topical issues of the day including
  • creating appealing dishes on a budget
  • why World Heritage listing is important for the Mt Lofty Ranges
  • the packaged appearance of food versus the reality

  • In the Regions of South Australia
There are a load of associated events happening all around SA to celebrate our delicious produce - from Streaky Bay oysters to Kapunda chooks and Coonawarra wines, most parts of the State are joining with Tasting Australia to celebrate our best. Here's just a few:
  • The Agrarian Kitchen at Appellation three course lunch in the Barossa, with fabulous Henscke South Australian wine
  • The Adelaide Hills boast a five-course, paddock-to-plate menu with matched wines at Ngeringa Vineyards
  • The Future of Food lunch with Joe Salatin at ethical lamb producers Savannah Farm in the Clare Valley
  • Learn about life on the station while enjoying a three-course lamb tasting menu in the Flinders ranges

  • The Producers' Picnic
Tasting Australia climaxes with the Producers' Picnic in Victoria Square on Sunday, May 4. Grab a blanket, your friends and a basket or platter and assemble your own picnic lunch from the multitude of stalls offering great gourmet goods produced in Adelaide and the regions of South Australia. Perhaps consider public transport, as there will be some awesome wines on offer too!

There are just so many things to see and do in Adelaide during Tasting Australia, that I have been only able to touch on a small selection of events. Be sure to check out the Tasting Australia website , and follow them on Facebook or on Twitter to make sure you don't miss out.
