When you think of food in Bali, the thought of Indonesian food may naturally be the first thing that comes to mind; you may not instantly think of Italian ice cream and alcoholic hand-made Limoncello. However sometimes when you are traveling, you yearn for foreign food and by this I mean food that is foreign to the country you are currently visiting.
If your yearning runs to all things Italian - I have a wonderful place to share with you in Ubud, Bali where there is a restaurant high up on the ridge, named Tartufo.
Tartufo is run by a dedicated chef and a friendly happy team of staff and you'll find wonderful Italian food here. My son decided that he was an especially hungry teenager and could cope with very large pizza - you can see the results of that order here and I think it is the first time he was ever unable to finish a pizza. Rest assured, the wonderful stuff that Tartufo even organised a take home box for him.
The pizzas here freshly baked in a wood fired pizza oven, the ingredients werefresh from the market and sure to satisfy. My favourite dish here is their spinach and ricotta cannelloni; the freshly made pasta sauce has a tangy delicious flavour to it that sets off the cheese beautifully.
They also make salads, pizza, pasta, meats and all manner of Italian foods. They also have a wine cellar and will assist you to pair a wine or two with your meal. They are located high up on Tjampuhan Ridge, near to Ananda Cottages and slightly higher up than Indus restaurant.
As you arrive, the front of the restaurant, faces the street with a decadent freezer cabinet filled with all manner of Italian ice creams and gelato. Yes, my family have been known to make the trip up here later in the evening just for an ice cream.
I decided to have fun with the staff one day and we spent quite some time discussing all of their favourite flavours - *Insiders secret knowledge - most of them love the banana the best. For me, I must have slightly more guilty delights taste buds as I can't seem to go past the Rum and Raisin. I also love the decadent flavours of Bacio, Chocolate and Tiramisu. Their fruit sorbets are refreshing and lovely too.
One of the things I love about Tartufo, is that it is one of the few ice cream parlors in Ubud that will allow you to mix two flavours in one serving, making it great value at only 25000 rupiah ($2.50) per serve. As Tartufo are located a little distance out of the main street of Ubud, they are often away from the hustle and bustle that has come to be Ubud - making it a great place for a romantic dinner or a good meeting spot for friends.
Have you been to tartufo? If so we would love to hear your favourite dishes here and what you enjoyed.
Please leave your comments in the comment box above to share with us. If you have not yet been to tartufo you are in for a treat!
