Kungka Ku& #7753 ;pu (Strong Women)

Kungka Ku& #7753 ;pu (Strong Women) is an exhibition at AGSA ( Art Gallery of South Australia ), North Terrace, Adelaide. The exhibition launches on 22 Oct 2022, from where it will tour nationally till 16 June 2022. It showcases major contemporary works by more than 60 A& #7753 ;angu celebrated women artists from the A& #7753 ;angu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Land, cultural custodians of an oral tradition that epitomises the art of storytelling. These women share an irrepressible desire to create ground-breaking works and have worked individually and collaboratively. They are deeply embedded with cultural knowledge and are rich in ceremonial song and performance. To find a list of all the artists involved, see here .

Kungka Ku& #7753 ;pu tells the inspiring tale of women supporting each other across generations and it is expressed through exemplary paintings, large-scale woven sculptural installations and moving image. These works centre on caring for Country, mapping significant sites and life-sustaining practices of the desert, while also sharing complex narratives surrounding family obligations and relationships. This includes the Kungkarangkalpa (Seven Sisters) story about women who travel together and look after each other. This is an important story for the A& #7753 ;angu women and is even more important today in paving the way for upcoming generations of women to fly. In touring, it'll give audiences outside of SA a rare opportunity to experience AGSA's far reaching and impactful Tarnanthi program of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

The exhibition includes Kungka Ku& #7753 ;pu, a cross-generational film that first premiered at Tarnanthi in 2019, which combines live action and animation. As artist Kaylene Whiskey explains, 'We want our film project to show a strong, positive message about life in a remote Indigenous community. Us young women here in Indulkana love to dance and have fun and make each other laugh. We're proud to live on our land and hold on to our culture and our language.'
