Fresh cakes and slices at Tarlee Bakery
The Tarlee Bakery is located on the Horrocks Highway, at Tarlee. Here the Main North Road, briefly becomes Gilbert Street, before heading onward to the Clare Valley.

The bakery is located opposite the information board and public toilet. It is an excellent place to stop and purchase a snack. Around lunchtime, they prepare light meals, and you sit at a table inside.

We arrived around 3 PM on a Saturday and raided the best they had in their oven. I had a Cornish pasty that was full of fresh vegetables and a touch of pepper. My friend had two pies.

Next to the oven was a sweets display. The usual custard slices and apple slices were on display, but I noticed a sweet that looked different. I asked for a slice and was told it was liquorice.

The filling looked a bit like caramel, but it was lighter and I suspected mixed with coconut. Liquorice all sorts were actually embedded into the filling! The slice had a biscuit base and was topped with poured chocolate.

I enjoyed the unusual snack immensely. I'm always looking into sweets cabinets, only to be disappointed that no one has used their imagination and invented a new sweet. Today I was rewarded for my vigilance.

So, the bakery might look like it is in the middle of nowhere, but it is a good place to stop and revive on a long journey. Or else, if you want a country drive, but do not want to go too far, this is a nice stop.
