The Taradale wine and produce is a unique country cafe with a long colourful history. There are several small rooms filled with an eclectic bunch of furniture, including an assortment of couchese, kitchen and coffee tables. My daughter thought we had accidentally walked into someone's house instead of a café when we entered the back room.

There's been no attempt to modernise the outside of the building (or the inside) so it keeps its old worldly feel that is uncommon in many city cafes. Even the waitress has her hair in plats and is not at all suspicious about my dozens of questions. I guess she is just a good old-fashioned friendly country girl who rather likes a chat. I noticed she had a book ready to flick open when it got quite.

A local motorbike rider said if he'd had lunch he would stop here for the polenta cake. Today they had run out so he was enjoying a homemade shortbread biscuit. The sign brags about their coffee and it sure does smell good.

The Taradale Wine and produce sell wood fired pizzas on Friday and Sunday. The local owners like to keep Saturday for family time. They often have music in the beer garden and local art exhibitions from time to time.

About eight years ago they moved the location from across the road to the old post office. You can see how the blue stone step has worn down from many locals in the last hundred years.

There's a few surprises in store at The Taradale Wine and produce. They have shelves of books to relax and read, vintage clothes (mostly) and shoes and jewellery for sale things at work on the walls. The clothes sell on consignment.

Taradale Wine and Produce sells a selection of local and regional produce including the full range of Fryerstown Road Vineyard wine. Also available is specialty produce.

A bonus for parents is that the new revamped Taradale park is just across the road. You can sit in the outside courtyard area and the park is just a few metres across the road. For city slickers this might seem risky but there is rarely any traffic on that road. When I was there a parent was calling out to the kids who could easily hear their instructions.
