You could think "Tapa" from the word tapas meaning small Spanish savoury dishes served with drinks at a bar and "Vino" with Italian and Spanish origins meaning wine could be exactly what Tapavino at Circular Quay offer. And you would be right. Opening in August 2012, Tapavino embraces the Spanish culture of sip-a-little-bit-of-this-and-eat-a-little-bit-of-that in its small alleyway bar. Known as Australia's first Sherry Bar Tapavino does not only serve sherry, in fact they showcase over 300 Spanish wines and 80 sherries. Dedicated to serving beautiful wines and sherries, the clever chefs have also crafted a menu of perfectly teamed tapas style dishes which compliment each glass of wine or sherry.

Walking in off the cobblestoned pathway the small room was buzzing with excitement. Tables were full inside and outside but we were lucky to find a seat at the bar without waiting. Settling onto the tall bar stool in the tight corner of the bar we ordered a bowl of popcorn to start with while we chose our wine. We pondered over the main meals but chose the Galician eggplant and goat's curd tostado for $12. Reasonably priced with plenty of choice. Other close contenders were the warm potato, caramelised onion, rosemary & salt coca at $14, the eye fillet beef carpaccio, eshalots and shaved manchego at $20 and warm cow's cheese with walnuts in vine leaves a la plancha for $14. We did settle on the last choice too and were not disappointed.

Both dishes arrived swiftly and we happily shared both as we drank two glasses of wine each. The eggplant and goats cheese was rich and kind to the flavours of the wine with its smooth cheese and tasty parsley. My favourite was the cows cheese with walnuts in the vine leaves as it was such a different choice and completely full of flavour. It didn't dominate over the wine but was teamed nicely. Although the wine and tapas work well together, it seems the size of the bar really doesn't work for Tapavino. Although it does encompass the whole small Spanish wine bar criteria it seems way too small to enjoy your time spent here. We were pushed and trampled on by other patrons trying to move in and around us which just made us want to leave. We would have preferred to stay a while but it was not meant to be.
