Located just off the road between Napier and Tangoio Falls is Tangoio Beach. This is a very local spot where you can take a gentle walk, enjoy the scenery, and enjoy a moment of solitude.

From the car park as you face the ocean, to the right is a large pebble beach with views all the way back to Hospital Hill and Napier. Here there is also a surf break for any keen surfers, although the water does get cold in winter. To the left is a small footpath, starting with a small set of stairs leading around the side of the cliff face. If you follow this route, you will pass a few benches overlooking the ocean and have some fantastic views of the very aptly named "Flat Rock".

This walk, despite being rather lovely, is not very popular or well known, and so it isn't so well maintained. Last time I ventured out there some of the footpath had eroded away into the ocean, but it was still possible to amble all the way along to the rocky headland. Obviously, if you decide to do this, you must watch your footing and be careful. The views from the headland are outstanding as you can see all of Napier and Cape Kidnappers on a clear day. It's a great place to sit, relax and just watch the ocean.

In summer, the area is more populated with walkers, swimmers and fisherman, but still remains a peaceful escape from the city and perfect for a sunny afternoon.
