This is no ordinary Indian restaurant. Tandoori Flames has been completely refurbished with stunning pendant lights and very classy and comfortable cream button back booth style seating and red dining seating fit for royalty. On entering it looks a bit like an upmarket hotel restaurant.

The owners greet you at the entrance which is like the reception area of a fine hotel. Namaste and Jimmy pride themselves on their traditional Indian food and courteous and attentive service. They have trained their staff well. Two smiling waiters checked in on us during each course to make sure it was to our liking. We were served complementary papadams with mint and spicy tomato dips as soon as we were seated.

A visit to Tandoori Flames is not just about the food. They love entertainment… Bollywood style. They host live music, belly dancing and have a dance floor for those who wish to partake. If you want to join in with the belly dancer, it is heartedly encouraged.

The menu was too extensive to choose from so we agreed on the vegetarian banquet (also available in vegan) so that we could sample a range of their best. This is extraordinary value or only $25 we enjoyed two large entrees Vegetarian Pakora and Aloo Tikki. For Mains we were served: Daal Makhni, Malai Kofta with Raita, Saffron rice, Garlic Naan (steaming hot off the stove top) and fresh crisp garden salad (tomatoes, carrots, onions and cucumber). For dessert we had a special ice-cream. It was unlike anything I've ever tasted before. It looked like peppermint but is coconut and unusually the spice cardamon.

The Vegetarian Pakora was seasoned vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower and spinach at a guess) tossed in special spices and battered in very yummy crispy chickpea flour. My favorite food of the night was the Aloo Tikki. These lentil and curried potato puffs were lightly crumbed and deep fried and just melted in the mouth. I could have eaten a dozen of these.

The Daal Makhni was a black lentil dish that I had never had before. Even if you are not partial to dahl, you should try this. It had been simmered over embers in a Tandoori oven with onions, chili, ginger, fresh cream and butter. This was pretty spicy. Then came the Malai Kofta that was mixed vegetables and cheese dumplings in a mild sauce. I think this was my runner up favourite.

Other popular dishes include Veggie Samosa, Butter Chicken, Rogan Josh and Lamb Vindaloo. When main meals are around $15 you can't go wrong. You can order online and they often have very big discounts.

There's a good reason why the food tastes so good. The chefs have over 50 years combined experience, working in some of the major five star hotels worldwide are creating some of the finest curries from royal court of India.

The couple next to us also had a banquet and although they loved it they also couldn't eat everything that was served. They thought they must have ordered a banquet for four. The meals are overly generous serves so in preparation don't eat all day. But if you are big eaters you can choose from two larger banquets available for $30 and $35.

Tandoori Flames have a constantly evolving menu and personalise menus to your tastes. Tandoori Flames has a carefully matched wine list. If by some chance when you go to Indian you don't want Indian, they also serve Indo-Chinese food. See the menu here .

Namaste and Jimmy obviously enjoy what they do. It's a large restaurant that also caters for special/corporate events and private functions with all the bling, pomp and ceremony that you desire. They also have a restaurant in West Footscray with unique charcoal grill tables that are bought to you. These take lots of preparation so book ahead. Namaste and Jimmy strive to cater for every need and tastes so call them to discuss banquet menus and group offers.

So overall, Tandoori Flames serve excellent food, great value servings fit for royalty and offer the friendliest service. There's plenty of parking on Brunel Street and Moresby Street. It's not surprising they have many loyal customers… you must try it.
