Say what you like about Tom Petty, but he's clearly a man who loves his skydiving. "And I'm free…free fallin'. Yeah I'm free…free fallin'."

Skydiving is best described as a glorious mix of science and stupidity. It's what you get when you combine the Wright Brothers' invention and Newton's law of universal gravitation with a determination to jump out of perfectly good aeroplane. If you love a good thrill and have no problem with heights, suck up the courage, man, and give it a go.

When your plane leaves the ground, expect the adrenaline to begin pumping. When it climbs higher and higher, understand that the churning of your stomach will become more and more pronounced. When your guide announces that you've almost reached the drop zone, resist the urge to vomit. When he opens the door to admit an incredibly cold and powerful and noisy wind, pray you've had the foresight to wear your brown underwear. When he tells you to move forward and sit with your feet dangling outside, summon every ounce of strength you possess. When he instructs you to jump in three…two…one, fear not. He'll be strapped to your back, which means that he'll probably be doing the jumping for you. And when he goes- you go.

It's not unheard of for rookies to momentarily pass out the moment they leave their safe place behind. After all, the brain is being asked to accept a staggeringly illogical concept. However, a split second later, all should again be well. Now, you no longer have an uncertain future to worry about, because it's already arrived. And it's a damn exhilarating one. With the guide lending his reassuring presence, that allows you to leave your fears behind, as you spread your limbs and soak up the heady feeling of screaming through the sky. There are few things in the world that can match free falling for excitement.

Suddenly, though, you'll feel as though somebody has taken an almighty kick to your stomach. Your jump buddy's released the parachute, and the abrupt change in speed has caused a shock to the system. But once you get your breath back, you'll begin savouring a completely different experience. Giddy speed has now made way for a serene float. Way down below, the world is spread out before you in remarkable detail. Enjoy it for as long as you can.
