Cake, a view and a kangaroo
I lived right next door to the old post office for nearly ten years before they demolished the old school house. They didn't have letterboxes in those days so every day I walked to the post office to get my letters from Bob. As far as I know he had worked at the pot office for fifty years until the day he died. He greeted everyone with a smile and had a story to tell anyone who listened.
In those days the old wire door swung loosely and banged loudly. The floor needed restumping and the old post office could fit no more than three people. Now the old post office has been completely rebuilt and much of the dining happens on the traditional old Aussie veranda. The view is spectacular and if you are lucky you might spot a kangaroo.
Apparently in the early 1900s this place was called Tancks Corner but it reverted back to Yarrambat (the original Aboriginal name). The new owners of the Post office wanted to keep a bit of history so they named the café Tancks Corner.
The café is open for breakfast and lunch. The hot coffee and chocolate are rich and hot and the menu original. Some of their specialties include:
Potato and leek rosti with salmon and eggs with rich hollandaise. Vanilla bean rice pudding with fresh strawberries and mango served in a preserve jar. My personal favorite is banana bread with poached rhubarb and pear and pistachios served on a breadboard.
Hazelnut and cranberry meringue cupcakes
Today we had a hazelnut and cranberry meringue cupcake. I've never tasted anything like it. I wish I could get the recipe so I could suitably impress any visitor.
While at Tancks you can attend to your postal needs as the post office is operating bigger and better than ever. They also stock gifts such as moisturisers, cushions, cards, jewellery, clothes, vases, pictures and ceramics.
Tanck's Corner is still a place for a chat, a stamp, a smile and a good feed.
