Mount Tamborine in the Gold Coast hinterland will be overrun by scarecrows during the annual Scarecrow Festival from 25 to 27 October 2024.



As you make your way up the steep mountain, don't be alarmed if you see more than one or two of these farmyard scarecrow figures. If you haven't come across scarecrows before, the idea originates from Egypt where man-made mannequins resembling humans were created to scare birds away from precious crops during harvest.

When it comes to the Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival this is how it works, Members of the community and businesses design, make and decorate their original mannequin along the "Spot The Scarecrow Discovery Trail." You might see a scarecrow aside at a home, a business, at cafes or along the Gallery Walk or a community space. There's a lot of room for creativity and interpretation in the design. Perhaps see some with a happy hat, a smiley face, a shirt, a pair of trousers, and braces.



It does get a little competitive and rewarding with prizes on offers for the best scarecrows in the following categories:

As well, there are poetry and colouring competitions. Entries to the colouring competition are available from local businesses and entries will be displayed in the local library. It's all about community.

And the festival just so happens to coincide with the spooky celebrations of Halloween. How clever!

To see the scarecrows for yourself, head to Mount Tambourine which is situated about 80km south of Brisbane. If driving, you can travel via Beenleigh (exit 35) and follow state route 92 along the Beaudesert Beenleigh Road through Tamborine Village,
