The wonders of nature never cease to amaze. The Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves, while technically man-made constructions, are filled with thousands of glowing glow worms – a wonder of nature indeed.

So, why do these little babies glow? It’s basically a clever ploy to attract dinner! They light up in resplendent glory to attract small insects, which they ensnare in a web of silk threads smeared with sticky droplets to make them all the more enticing. Clever, huh!

So is this cheeky little poem at the top right of the page. I love it!

The more scientifically-minded amongst us might like to know about the life cycle of the glow worm, or of the Arachnocampa flava species in this instance, found exclusively in the rainforest areas of Southeast Queensland.

Or maybe simply go along and discover it for yourself via a fascinating audio-visual display in the Presentation Cave, which also features very realistic stalagmites and stalactites, water features and flow stone. Then it’s a short trek down a tunnel to see the star attractions in the glow worm cave.

Guided tours run every half hour. Leave your camera at home as photography is not allowed. Just bring along a good memory, which I think is often better than experiencing something through a tiny lens.

And .... Shhhhhh. An important part of the experience is hearing the sounds and quietly absorbing the magical atmosphere of the cave.
