Taman Bahasa Bandung (Language Park)

On a Sunday morning, my toddler and I enjoy taking a walk along the car-free area as mentioned in this feature . However, on our most recent venture out I came across a small group of local people speaking English. Seeing the banner sign I was intrigued, joined in and ended up having the most wonderful morning and conversation.

Every Sunday along Jalan Dago, which is in the centre of Bandung, there's car-free weekend. Just nearby here you'll find the Ganesha Park, in its own right a beautiful park and well worth a visit. At the main entrance of the park, there's a large 'Cubical Monument' and this is where the small group meet. Although it's the biggest free English get together in Bandung when I attended there were only around 15 people, but we had a wonderful time.

Basically, the morning is all about giving people the opportunity to come together to practise English conversation skills. They welcome everyone no matter where you are from or your level of English. When I attended there were mostly Indonesians and the ages and backgrounds varied from single teenagers to mothers of my age. The levels of English also varied meaning some people were more confident than others.

If you're like to join this group they meet anytime during the official times of 8am -10am although we stayed until around 12 noon. The first time I passed the area at 8am there was no one there, but then I returned after car-free street had finished and found the group in full swing. So if you do turn up and no one is there, have a wander around and then return a little later. Or pull up a chair from behind the sign and sit down so that people know you're wanting to join the group.

If you're a native English speaker you'll be in even more demand as some people were wanting to work on their accents.

As for the topics, well they are free for the group to decide upon. While I was there, we started on education, how it varies between Indonesia and England and then moved onto home-schooling and whether or not women should receive a higher level of education than men. After that, we chatted about roles of women in society and for some reason, and I can't remember how we got onto this topic but, we even chatted about Brexit - in a very friendly and calm manner.

Not only did I love chatting and sharing my English with others, but I also loved to hear about other people's thoughts, opinions and understanding of the world around them.

I would really recommend joining the group as it felt nice to give back to people by helping them learn but also was a fun way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.

For more information follow their social media.

Hope to see you at the next get together.
