Tamala Park Landfill and Recycling Tours

Tamala Park is not yet a park. It is still a landfill area with a recycling and educational centre on site.

Mindarie Regional Council which operates the site on behalf of several councils organises free tours of the site.



Located between the suburbs of Clarkson and Kinross, this site has been operating for the last 12 years. Two thirds of the site is now filled with only one pit left to fill. The rubbish is covered daily by limestome to help compact the rubbish and reduce any odours and to prevent birds taking rubbish away.

Due to landfill sites of the future being located outside the metropolitan area, recycling is now the focus through education.



A second hand goods shop onsite, allows shoppers to browse amongst bikes, furniture, toys and other items. The shop is open Friday through to Monday only and is open to all Perth residents.



Next to the shop, you may drop off your unwanted items such as paints, used cooking oils (which is converted to biodiesel for vehicles onsite), cardboard and mattresses. The mattresses are sent to a company for use in mine sites for soaking up oils.



Used chemicals, petrol, oils and toxic cleaners are also collected and stored onsite until disposed of correctly. Electronic goods are sent over east to be recycled through separating their parts. Gas bottles and fire extinguishers are also recycled.



Over a quarter million tonnes of rubbish is buried annually. Methane gas is collected onsite from the breakdown of compacted matter and used onsite to generate electricity.
