On Thursday, 8 May 2025 - for one night only - you are invited to an extraordinary cinematic event TALL TALES - the collaborative album and visual experience by fabled English record producer Mark Pritchard, luminary songwriter Thom Yorke and groundbreaking visual artist Jonathan Zawada.
Presented in collaboration with WARP RECORDS, special event screenings of TALL TALES are being scheduled across the globe the day before the release of the much-anticipated new album of the same name.
Tall Tales
TALL TALES has been a decade in the making and follows on from Pritchard's sublime remixes of 'Bloom' for Radiohead, 'Not the News' from Yorke's solo album Anima and 'Beautiful People,' a stunning collaboration with Yorke and the centerpiece of Pritchard's 2016 solo opus Under The Sun.
These collaborations appear to have lit a spark and amid the despair and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pritchard and Yorke would send demos back and forth - with Yorke contributing vocals, synthesisers, and effects. (1) Zawada came on board as the third member of the group, contributing to the artwork of the album TALL TALES and directing, editing, and animating the feature-length film accompanying the album.
A Fake in a Faker's World
"We wanted computers to do our accounting - instead, they try to paint our pictures and sing our songs."
TALL TALES is described as a "fairy tale for the modern world; depicting rising tides, kings & queens, amazon logistics and robotic arms under iridescent skies." Set on a spinning island in the sky, which is reminiscent of those old-school adventure game maps like Secret of Monkey Island, we follow a wide-eyed, somewhat weary wandering bird guide as he comes across new destinations, each leading us to a new audio-visual experience.
Over 1 hour, audiences will be immersed in Zawada's hyperreal environments, blended with archival footage, CGI, and 'flawed' AI artwork which are cleverly juxtaposed against Yorke's hauntingly raw and at times digitally modified vocals, all underscored by Pritchard's shimmering and pulsating electronics.
The Spirit
The videos are sequenced differently from the album - leading to an abstract narrative in which we are never quite sure if our guide is discovering new territory or trying to escape this idyllic island. With each video, the line between the past and future, the organic and digital, and natural beauty and the artificial are blurred.
It's a remarkable experience that questions where our insatiable appetite for 'progress’ might have landed us and showcases three accomplished artists at the top of their game.
Three videos have currently been released - 'Back in the Game' which premiered at Yorke's Everything shows, 'This Conversation is Missing Your Voice,' and 'Gangsters.' Check them out below if you want a sneak peek of what the TALL TALES visual experience has to offer.
