Tales From The Bush is a children's picture book that contains stories and characters from the classic Australian children's book series
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie (1918).
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie was written by May Gibbs (1877-1969). May Gibbs is considered to be one of Australia's most beloved children's book authors and illustrators.
Tales From The Bush is 24 pages long and was published by Scholastic in 2017 to celebrate 100 years since the publication of
Gumnut Babies (1916) and
GumBlossom Babies (1916).
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, also known as the Gumnut Babies, are the protagonists of the series. Gumnut babies are miniature, fully formed humans, who are modelled after Eucalyptus gum nuts. Female gumnut babies are modelled after Eucalyptus flowers and have hair, hats and skirts. May Gibbs was inspired to create the characters based off the bushland of Harvey, Western Australia, where she spent time living as a child.
When I was a kid growing up, I really liked
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. I can remember thinking I thought they looked like fairies.
Tales From The Bush is a wonderful collection of May Gibb's iconic
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie stories. The book contains three short stories:
The Treasure Hunt,
Ragged Blossom's Garden, and
Mischievous Mrs Snake. The text is large and simple for children to read and the illustrations are gorgeous with lots of bright greens, blues and pinks. Snugglepot, Cuddlepie and Ragged Blossom are curious little creatures who get up to a lot of mischief in the bush. Children will love reading about their adventures and adults will enjoy the nostalgia of returning to a beloved Australian classic.
